Athabasca University defines itself as an “open university”.
There are a number of other aspects of openness at AU as well, including the use of open source software such as Moodle and Alfresco, and the use of open educational resources (OER) as learning materials for courses. There is an increasingly active OER community in the world, in which we participate through innovative partnerships.
As an example, Athabasca University is a founding partner of the OER universitas network, which aims to provide sustainable education for learners around the world.
Since 2009, AU has hosted a series of lunch hour sessions under the auspices of International Open Access Week. For a broad view of open access, visit the archived webcasts of the sessions from 2009 to 2013.
